Energy saving > Issues in the power industry Currently the power industry is unable to produce the necessary energy to supply the unstopable increasing demand. This is mainly due to a lack of resources, the nuclear energy moratorium, and the slow development and higher costs of renewable energy. This drives many regions of the world to import energy produced in other countries, thus increasing costs and energy dependence in foreign countries. Energy costs are expected to increase in the following years by 20% in order for utilities to cover costs of production, which today are even subsidized in many countries. Governments such as that of Spain are beginning to take measures to correct this tariff deficit in years ahead. On the other hand, the necessary deregulation of the energy sector promoted by european directives, together with the increasing costs of production of renewable energy, could higher the electricity price by more than 30% in the years ahead. |
